Every road sign is really two products: an aluminium blank that will outlive everyone reading this, and a reflective face that quietly degrades from the day it is installed.
How retroreflection actually works
Ordinary paint scatters light in all directions, so almost none of a headlight beam comes back to the driver. Retroreflective sheeting sends light back along the path it arrived on, which is why a sign appears to glow from the driving seat and looks unremarkable from the verge.
Older sheeting uses glass beads; modern high-performance sheeting uses moulded cube-corner prisms, which are far more efficient and hold their return at the wide angles that matter on a bend or at a junction.
Engineer grade
The entry specification, glass-bead based, with a service life of roughly seven years. It is genuinely fine for car parks, yards, low-speed private roads and any sign that is mostly read in daylight.
Its weakness is wet nights and wide angles, which is exactly where a public-road sign earns its keep. Specifying it there is a false economy.
High-intensity prismatic
The general-purpose choice for public roads: prismatic, roughly ten-year life, and a large step up in both brightness and wet-weather performance over engineer grade.
For most councils and most roads this is the correct answer, and it is what we recommend unless there is a reason to go higher.
Diamond grade
The top specification, with the highest return and around twelve years of service life. It costs meaningfully more and is worth it in specific places: high approach speeds, overhead mounting, complex junctions, and roads with a high share of older drivers, since retroreflective return matters more as eyes age.
It is not a blanket upgrade. Spending the difference on the right grade in the right places beats putting diamond grade on everything.
When to replace
Sheeting does not fail suddenly; retroreflectivity falls off gradually until the sign is no longer doing its job at night while still looking fine by day. That is the trap.
Check signs after dark from a vehicle rather than in daylight on foot. A sign that looks clean at noon and dim at midnight is due for replacement regardless of its age.
